Local Passion: The Story Behind 30 Knots Spirits

At Nationwest Aviation, we love seeing local businesses capture the heart and soul of their region, creating experiences that are both unique and deeply connected to place. 30 Knots Spirits is one such business—a craft distillery in Geraldton that blends coastal inspiration, premium handcrafted spirits, and a passion for community.

Opened in May 2022 by husband and wife duo, Murray and Kelly Killen, this small family-run business is driven by a passion for exceptional spirits, showcasing the flavours of Geraldton, and creating a welcoming space where locals and visitors alike can gather, sip, and celebrate—all while embracing the adventure of running a business and raising their young family.

The Inspiration: A Spirit of Geraldton

30 Knots Spirits was born from a love of distilling and a deep appreciation for Geraldton’s rugged coastal landscape. The owners set out to create something truly special—a distillery that reflects the region’s character, where both locals and visitors can enjoy handcrafted spirits that tell a story.

“We wanted to create something truly unique for Geraldton—a place where locals and visitors can experience handcrafted spirits that reflect the region’s character,” Co-Owner Kelly shares. And with that vision, 30 Knots was launched.

The Journey: From Idea to Award-Winning Distillery

Like any great adventure, the road to opening 30 Knots wasn’t without its challenges. Navigating regulations, mastering the distillation process, and fine-tuning every detail required patience, persistence, and a lot of paperwork. But the effort paid off.

Today, 30 Knots Spirits isn’t just a well-loved local spot; it’s a brand that has gained national and international recognition for both its premium spirits and its beautifully designed bottles and labels. One of the biggest rewards for the team has been seeing people enjoy their spirits, share them with friends and family, and then return for more—whether in person or online.

A Distillery with a Sense of Place

Location matters, and 30 Knots has made its home in a space that perfectly embodies the spirit of Geraldton. Sitting across from Champion Bay Beach at 166 Chapman Road, the distillery is infused with salty coastal vibes. But it’s not just about location—the building itself has a story.

Over the past 30 years, the site has served various purposes, but 30 Knots has given it a new lease on life. With a focus on reuse, repurpose, and recycle, the distillery incorporates local materials, from old jetty timbers to reclaimed bricks and pieces sourced from the Abrolhos Islands. Even the name “30 Knots” is a nod to the strong winds that shape Geraldton’s coastal identity.

This deep connection to the local environment extends to the spirits themselves. Many feature native botanicals like Geraldton wax and native lemon myrtle, creating flavours that are truly reflective of the land.

The 30 Knots Experience

What sets 30 Knots apart isn’t just the spirits—it’s the experience. Whether you’re a seasoned gin lover or just curious, every visit to the distillery is personal, immersive, and full of character. Guests are encouraged to take their time, enjoy tastings, and hear the stories behind each bottle.

One of the most rewarding aspects of the business has been converting “non-gin drinkers” into fans. Many visitors who claim they don’t like gin leave with a newfound appreciation—and often a bottle or two! The team is also gearing up to launch their first rum, hoping to redefine perceptions of the spirit with a rich, smooth flavour profile crafted from a molasses base.

Beyond the spirits, 30 Knots also integrates the local arts scene into their space. Live music performances on weekends, partnerships with local businesses, and participation in major community events like Shore Leave Festival and Blessing of the Fleet make the distillery more than just a place to grab a drink—it’s a hub for local culture.

Looking Ahead: A Growing Name in Craft Spirits

As 30 Knots continues to grow, they remain committed to staying true to their roots. Expanding their product line—especially their rum—is a major focus, as is continuing to put Geraldton on the map for craft spirits.

“We’re not trying to be the biggest—we’re focused on being the most authentic,” Kelly explains. “By staying true to our identity and delivering quality spirits with a genuine experience, we can stand out in the industry.”

With a passion for quality, community, and constant innovation, 30 Knots is not just crafting spirits—it’s crafting a legacy. And as Geraldton gains more recognition as a food and drink destination, 30 Knots is ready to be at the heart of it.

At Nationwest Aviation, we celebrate businesses like 30 Knots, who take the essence of a place and turn it into something special. Whether you’re a local or just passing through, a visit to this distillery is an experience worth savouring.
